VOLUNTEER VISA APPLICATION PROCESS

- How do I apply for a visa?
Before traveling to Ghana, all volunteers will have to obtain a visa from the nearest Ghanaian Embassy, Consulate or High Commission.

- What are the requirements to satisfy when applying for a Ghanaian visa?
You must obtain or acquire a volunteer visa before travelling to Ghana. Upon securing your placement, PACODEP will send you a letter supporting your application for a visa. Please plan to receive your visa at least two (2) weeks before you schedule to travel. For all other requirements for a visa application, please visit the website of your home country's Ghanaian Embassy or Consulate.

- What if I need to extend my visa?
If you have to extend your visa whiles in Ghana, PACODEP will take you over to the Immigration office to apply for a visa extension. This is because when you arrive at the Ghanaian airport you will receive a stamp for 60 days stay in your passport. If you will be staying longer than 60 days, you will have to extend your visa which by so doing PACODEP, your host will assist you do that.

- What should I select under the purpose of journey section?
You should select volunteer as the purpose of your journey. If you do not have the option of selecting volunteering, please select Holidays/Tourism as the purpose of your journey.

- Should I choose a single entry or a multiple entry visa?
If you will not travel outside Ghana during your stay with PACODEP, you can choose a single entry visa. However if you will travel out Ghana during your stay with PACODEP, you must have a multiple visa to in other to enter Ghana again. You may obtain a re-entry visa while in Ghana if you only have a single entry visa, but wish to travel outside Ghana during the period of your stay with PACODEP.

PRE-TRAVEL PREPARATIONS

What are the necessary requirements one needs to meet in other to volunteer or Intern with PACODEP?
- You must be at least 18 years of age at the time of your placement.
- You must have a good background and interest in the chosen placement.
- You must provide PACODEP with your Curriculum Vitae outlining your past experiences, inputs and outputs.
- You must be open minded, hardworking, kind and above all has greater love for children.

PAYMENT
- Why does PACODEP charge volunteers, interns and how much will it cost you?
Some volunteers may be surprised to learn that PACODEP now charges from volunteers. On the face of it, this may seem ridiculous. Why should I pay money to work for free? Am I not forgoing income I could be making?
Please here are some few things to keep in mind whiles trying to understand why the vast majority organizations or PACODEP charge international volunteers some fees.
- Please, PACODEP has very limited resources to make any financial commitment of any volunteer or spend money on any volunteer.
- The cost involve in hosting a volunteer is cost effective, which PACODEP cannot afford to pay that.
- The process of accommodation includes feeding and also transportation from Accra the capital city to Kete- krachi where PACODEP is situated.

WHAT IS THE MODE OF PAYMENT?
You may pay at the bank and scan the receipt to PACODEP. Below is the secured bank account information of PACODEP to do your payment.

IS MY PAYMENT FEE TAX DEDUCTABLE?
Please kindly contact or discuss this with your local tax office. PACODEP is a registered Non Governmental Organization in Ghana.

DOES PACODEP ACCEPT PAYMENT IN INSTALLMENT
Yes, at PACODEP we do accept payment by installment as long as the final payment would be done before your coming.

CAN I PAY AFTER ARRIVING IN GHANA?
Please the answer is NO, final payment should be made at least 30 days before the date of your arrival.

WHAT TYPES OF VOLUNTEER PROJECTS ARE AVAILABLE?
PACODEP offers a broad range of volunteer projects in order to match the skills and interests of the volunteer with the objectives of Pacodep, whether you are working to improve Education, for children, enhance the quality of Healthcare, assist with the care of infants at the home, assist in Construction Works, Painting Works etc. Volunteer projects are always aligned with Pacodep's current needs.

ARE THERE ANY MEDICAL REQUIREMENT FOR TRAVELING TO GHNANA?
Please visit a health-care provider at least 4-6 weeks before your trip to allow time for you vaccine to take effect and to start taking medicine to prevent malaria, if you need it. Even if you have less than 4 weeks before you leave, you should still see a health-care provider for needed vaccines, anti-malaria drugs and other medications and information about how to protect yourself from illness and injury while traveling.

The recommended vaccines to have are:

• Yellow Fever Vaccine ( Required for the Ghana Visa)
• Anti-Malaria Pills (Required)
• Typhoid (Required)
• Tetanus, TB and Polio (Recommended)
• Immunoglobulin or Hepatitis A Vaccine (Recommended)
• Hepatitis B Vaccine (Recommended)
• Rabies (Recommended)

WILL I BE ABLE TO BUY MY MEDICTIONS IN GHANA?
We strongly recommend that you bring along any medication you will need as we cannot guarantee that you can access your need in Ghana.

CAN I BRING MY LAPTOP, CAMERA, PHONE AND OTHER ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT?
We especially recommend that you bring your laptop along, as you will very likely need it. You also can bring other items such as your phone, camera etc. We suggest that you consider adding these items to your insurance package.

WHAT KIND OF ADAPTOR DO I NEED?
Ghana generally uses UK sockets. And these are the sockets you will find at the accommodation. Please ensure that you have an adaptor which will allow you use a UK sockets.

DO I NEED TO BRING MY OWN BEDDING?
No, budding will be provided and its part of your fee.

I WILL LIKE TO BRING SOME SUPPLIES FOR PACODEP, THE RESCUED VICTIMS AT THE HOME.
Here are a couple of suggestions on what to bring;

  • School Supplies such as, pens, note books, text books, reading books, art supplies etc.
  • Teaching Supplies such as, pens, Note Books, Chalk, Toys, Games and other recreational supplies for kids etc.
  • Kids Wear such as, T-Shirts, Sandals, Flip Flops, Crock Shoes, Pants, Toiletries, Towels, Roll-ons, Stationary, Candy.

WILL MY CURRENT ISSURANCE BE ENOUGH?
We recommend that you look at also getting traveling insurance to make sure you are covered in case of lost of luggage, flight cancellations etc.

WILL I BE PICKED FROM THE AIRPORT ?
These will depend on whether you booked an accommodation to stay in Accra for a day before we set of to Kete-Krachi, besides we take care of your accommodation in Kete-Krachi where the program takes place and it's a 7hrs journey from Accra. But if you want us to take care of your accommodation in Accra and pick you up from the airport, then its possible, if not your hotel you booked will pick you up if requested.


LIVING CONDITIONS


WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE?
Ghanaian food is tasty, spicy and diverse. Staples include fufu, banku, kenkey and red-red (gari and beans with fried plantain) fried rice, vegetable rice, jullof rice all with chicken or fish, eggs, nodules , French rice . fresh fruits such as pineapple, avocado, orange, banana and pawpaw are also common.

IS FOOD INCLUDED IN THE VOLUNTEER FEE?
Yes, feeding is part of the fee and it's only in kete-krachi where the program takes place, aside that any outside trip you do requires your own feeding and accommodation.

HOW MUCH DO THINGS COST?
Western products are generally more expensive because they are imported. Please seek advice from the coordinator about where to buy items at a lower cost. You can reasonably budget $10.00 per day. However, if you would like to do a good bit of sightseeing and eating out, you are recommended budgeting at least $20.00 per day.

WILL I HAVE ACCESS TO THE INTERNET IN KETE-KRACHI?
Yes, the will be a Wi-Fi at the accommodation provided by Pacodep.

WILL I BE SHARING A ROOM?
A maximum of 2 volunteers share a room, if the number of volunteers is low then you will have a room for yourself. Please note that a fee is applicable.

WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE?
Ghana has a tropical climate. Temperatures are high during the days, often going above 30 degrees Celsius. There are 2 seasons. The rainy season between April and September, peaking in June. During the rainy season, temperatures are slightly lower. The dry season runs between October and March. Expect warm summer temperature, with added humidity.
